The Little Match Girl Passion by David Lang Penitential music by Victoria and Byrd Sung by Sospiri, directed by Chris Watson 8pm Saturday 20 Febuary, Merton College Chapel
The Little Match Girl Passion won the Pulitzer Prize in 2008. Of the piece, The Washington Post’s Tim Page said, “I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by a new, and largely unheralded, composition as I was by David Lang’s Little Match Girl Passion, which is unlike any music I know.” Lang retells the Hans Christian Andersen story using a sublime and deeply moving musical language (scored for voices and percussion). He uses the original text alongside his own, St Matthew’s Gospel and the libretto of Bach’s St Matthew Passion. As part of Theater of Voices, our director, Chris Watson, was intimately involved in the creation of this fabulous piece and the recording has just won a Grammy. Lang has recently produced a revised version for choir and percussion and this is the first UK performance.
