Merton College Chapel, Saturday 22 December 8pm
Sospiri’s traditional Christmas concert is a celebration of the transition from darkness to light. Beginning with the Annunciation, and Mary’s immortal response – the Magnificat – the musical sequence covers the anticipation of Advent, the joy of the Nativity, through to the presentation in the temple, where the old man Simeon, casting his eyes upon the infant Jesus, is moved to utter the glorious words of the Nunc Dimittis. The concert is also a celebration of the centuries of music which grace our churches and cathedrals, capturing something of the wonder and mystery of Christmastide: with works by William Byrd, John Duggan, Josquin des Prez, Herbert Howells and Peter Warlock, alongside traditional chants, carols and lullabies.
